Check-Out Line Judgment

I guess it’s not really a judgment… but I do like to entertain myself. If I find myself waiting in the check-out line, I take a look at what everyone else is buying. I imagine what each person’s life is like. “OMG… she must have 800 kids.” “He’s having poker night.” “She’s making dinner for her boyfriend for the first time.” That sort of thing.

On my way to work this morning, I stopped at the store for a few necessities. I went at 6:30 a.m. to avoid the droves of men who would be buying flowers for their valentines after work. Guess what? There were still lots of men buying flowers that early in the morning. LOL I pictured most were dropping flowers off for a girlfriend on their way to work… or taking flowers for their assistants. Then there was the dude in his pj pants. Did he wake up thinking, “Sh*t… I forgot!” Or did he sneak out to get flowers to surprise her when she woke up… with pancakes and strawberries?

Since I think these things, I can only imagine others do the same to me. I looked at what I was buying… Diet Coke, cough drops, cough medicine (one for night and one for day), and candy. What were they assuming about me? “Man, she’s really sick.” Or, “She’s single and staying that way.” LOL

Or am I the only one who thinks like this?

Add to your movie list: Zeitgeist & The Network

Zeitgeist

I watched the movie Zeitgeist this week (perhaps I live in a cave… it seems a lot of people have seen this). Anyway… it’s a very compelling film. It brought up a lot of new perspectives for me. I was blown away. I’m not sure that I buy into it all, but I was riveted. Even though I think some of it is a bit far-fetched, it was definitely thought-provoking. And I really think that’s the intent of the film… to wake us up and get us thinking.

With Presidents’ Day coming up, we’ve been studying the role of president and a couple notable presidents. Today one of my students asked if I knew about any other presidents. (LOL… kids are great.) I explained that I knew about a lot of presidents… that we’ve had some good presidents and some bad presidents… and that the reason we focus on Washington and Lincoln in second grade is because they were an important part in gaining our freedom… freedom from England and freedom from slavery. We also discussed how important freedom is.

We have a long history of fighting for freedom and civil rights. But now, with a country in constant turmoil over so many issues, we turn the other cheek and go on about our business. America is broken. Our government is ruining us as a country and as humans. When are we going to get mad enough to stand up for our civil liberties… to start the next revolution… to be a part of what once made this country great? When will we stop wondering who the next American Idol will be and who the next presidential robot will be and actually DO SOMETHING about this mess?

Complacency is killing us.

Gram

My Grandma passed away this weekend.  We were as prepared for this as any family can be, but it has still been difficult to handle.  Most of all, I worry about my Mom and Grandpa.  She was the center of their world.  She hasn’t been able to do much for herself for many years… so Mom and Grandpa focused on her 24/7.  I’m glad they will be able to actually live their lives now… but they will be very lonely for awhile.  I’m also so happy that Gram is finally free of pain!

She truly was an amazing woman.  Although she was this tiny little thing, Grandma somehow managed to command everyone’s attention.  She lit up any room she was in.  Gram had a sharp wit, and the gift of storytelling (and after traveling the world, she had a lot of great stories).  She was adored by all!

I hope that I can be half the woman she was…
